8000XHT Series Liquid Flow Meter Instruments: High-Temperature Sensor Specifications

Quick Answer: The 8000XHT Series liquid flow meter measures continuous media temperature up to 350 °C. It covers DN15 to DN200, supports 4-20 mA HART and pulse outputs, and fits hot oil, superheated water, and heat transfer fluid lines. Send your pipe size, temperature, pressure, and fluid name to Silver Automation Instruments for a sensor-specific quotation.

High-Temperature Sensor Hardware

The 8000XHT uses a vortex shedding sensor with a 316L stainless steel body. The sensor head sits away from the heated pipe wall. For media above 200 °C, the electronics are mounted remotely. The connection cable is PTFE jacketed and rated for continuous 250 °C ambient near the pipe. For media from 250 °C to 350 °C, Silver Instruments adds a cooling neck between the flow body and the transmitter. This design keeps the amplifier below 60 °C even when the liquid inside reaches 350 °C.

The standard sensor suit materials include 316L, ceramic, and graphite gaskets. No plastic parts touch the liquid. This matters for hot thermal oil, molten salt brine, and high-temperature glycol circuits. We have supplied this sensor type to a palm oil fractionation plant in Malaysia running heat transfer oil at 295 °C. The flow meter has been in service for two full seasons without a sensor drift issue.

Sensor Specifications

Key values for the 8000XHT sensor follow.

Media: liquid only, including thermal oil, hot water, condensate, hot solvents, and brines.
Temperature range: -20 °C to 350 °C continuous for the XHT high-temperature version.
Pressure rating: PN16, PN40, PN63, ANSI 150, ANSI 300, ANSI 600.
Pipe size: DN15, DN25, DN40, DN50, DN80, DN100, DN150, DN200.
Flow velocity: 0.3 to 10 m/s for liquids.
Accuracy: ±0.75 percent of reading for liquids above 10 percent of full range.
Repeatability: ±0.2 percent of reading.
Wetted materials: 316L stainless steel, ceramic, graphite gasket.
Process connection: wafer, flanged, or threaded depending on pressure and pipe size.
Ingress protection: IP65 standard, IP67 for remote mount.
Approvals: CE, ATEX Zone 1 optional, EAC optional.

In practice, most engineers care about three numbers first. These are the maximum temperature, the pressure rating, and the turndown. The 8000XHT handles a turndown of 10 to 1 for liquids. For low flow below 0.3 m/s, the output cuts off and the transmitter shows empty pipe or low flow alarm.

Output Options and Integration

Silver Instruments builds the 8000XHT with three output options.

Option one is 4-20 mA HART with two configurable alarm contacts. Option two is pulse and frequency output for batch control. Option three is Modbus RTU over RS485. The transmitter accepts a separate PT100 input for temperature compe

nsation on hot water and thermal oil. This matters because liquid density changes at high temperature. The flow computer can output mass flow in kg/h when the PT100 value is active.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A buyer orders a volumetric flow meter for hot oil but the plant needs mass delivery. With the PT100 input, the 8000XHT reports both volume and mass without a second device.

Installation Notes

Here is the thing about hot liquid lines. Install the 8000XHT with straight run piping. Use 15D upstream and 5D downstream for accuracy. Remove any control valve or elbow directly before the sensor. For steam tracing or hot oil lines, mount the transmitter below the pipe if possible. This keeps the electronics away from rising heat. For media above 280 °C, use the remote mount head. Do not mount the local display directly on the pipe insulation.

Because hot liquid lines expand, select flanged connections with the correct pressure class. Do not use wafer types on DN150 or larger lines with heavy thermal cycling. We have replaced wafer sensors on a chemical batch reactor in Vietnam after pipe expansion caused a leak at the gasket. The flanged version solved the issue.

FAQ

What is the highest liquid temperature for the 8000XHT Series?
The high-temperature sensor version handles 350 °C continuous. The standard version handles 180 °C. For thermal oil above 200 °C, choose the XHT suffix.

Can the 8000XHT measure hot water and condensate?
Yes. The sensor handles clean hot water and condensate. Use the PT100 input for mass flow if the plant tracks kg/h.

What output do most plants use for hot oil flow?
Most plants use 4-20 mA HART for DCS or PLC integration. Batch systems often need pulse output. Silver Instruments can supply both on the same unit.

Is ATEX Zone 1 available for high-temperature liquid flow?
Yes. The remote mount sensor can be ordered with ATEX Zone 1 certification. Specify the gas zone and temperature class with your inquiry.

What straight run does the 8000XHT need?
Use 15D upstream and 5D downstream. For high temperature lines, mount the transmitter away from the pipe and avoid control valves directly before the sensor.
