Tallow Biodiesel Flow Meter Mass Flow Sizing Verification

Quick Answer: For tallow biodiesel measurement, size your flow meter by mass flow (kg/h) and not by volume. A Coriolis meter from Silver Instruments handles density shifts from 850 to 900 kg/m³ and viscosities up to 20 cP without recalibration. Send your flow range, pipe size (DN), and process temperature to get a verified sizing check.

Why Mass Flow Not Volumetric for Tallow Biodiesel

Tallow biodiesel does not behave like diesel. At 40 °C its density sits around 880 kg/m³. During a cold morning startup in a plant in Thailand, the same batch can hit 920 kg/m³. Volumetric meters like turbine or oval gear see volume only. They do not know the mass. In practice, a 5% density swing means a 5% billing error. Most engineers skip this part until a batch audit fails.

With a Coriolis mass flow meter you measure kg/h directly. You also get live density and temperature from the same sensor. No density compensation tables. No extra PT100 insertion. That is useful when your raw material blend varies between tallow, used cooking oil, and palm oil mill effluent. A biodiesel exporter in Surabaya, Indonesia, switched from a turbine meter to our CMF series last year. Their custody transfer accuracy went from plus or minus 1.5% to plus or minus 0.2% of rate in the 10:1 turndown range.

Key Parameters for Sizing a Coriolis Meter on Tallow

Here is the thing. Size by mass flow range and pressure drop, not by the line size DN. A DN25 pipe often works fine with a DN15 sensor if the flow is low. But you have to check two parameters that a datasheet alone cannot give you.

Viscosity is the first one. Tallow biodiesel at 30 °C can reach 15 cP to 20 cP. At 60 °C it drops to 4 cP. That shift changes the pressure drop across the meter. Always give us the minimum operating temperature, not just the normal one. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A project in Vietnam sized a meter for 8 cP but the real cold start condition hit 18 cP. The meter tripped the pump pressure alarm until we replaced it with a lower deltaP model.

Second parameter is the flow turndown. A batch process fills a reactor in 30 minutes at 4500 kg/h, then controls a catalyst dosing line at 80 kg/h. A single meter needs a true 50:1 turndown to handle both. Silver Instruments CMF series gives 0.1% to 0.15% of rate accuracy over a 20:1 range and still operates stable at zero flow. For wider ratios we sometimes recommend a dual meter setup, but most biodiesel plants stay within 15:1.

Pipe size, pressure rating (bar), temperature (°C), and flow range (kg/h) are the inputs we need. A common tallow biodiesel application runs at DN25 to DN40, 8 to 12 bar, 50 to 80 °C, with flow spans of 200 to 3000 kg/h.

Silver Instruments Coriolis Models for Biodiesel Service

We offer the CMF series in sensor sizes DN10 through DN50 as standard, with larger sizes on request. For tallow biodiesel, three models cover most plant meters.

DN15 sensor body, housing the twin tube in 316L stainless steel, suits 0 to 700 kg/h with a process connection of ½ inch. A paint manufacturer in Malaysia uses this size for catalyst addition on a 200 kg/h line. DN25 handles 0 to 6000 kg/h and fits 1 inch pipe. This size covers reactor feed and loading skids. DN40 handles up to 24 000 kg/h for bulk transfer from stora

ge to ship. All come with 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and Modbus RTU as standard. Optionally you can add ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 certification, remote mount transmitter, and integrated PT100 if you need a secondary temperature reading for the DCS.

Because the meter measures mass directly, it ignores the small air pockets that often form in warm tallow lines. Those bubbles kill the accuracy of an ultrasonic meter but do not affect a Coriolis. That single reason has closed more than one order for us in the Philippines and Peru.

Field Verification Steps on a Biodiesel Plant

When a meter arrives on site, most engineers open the box, pipe it in, and power up. In practice, three quick checks save a return visit.

Zero verification with the line full of tallow biodiesel at process temperature and zero flow. Block valves upstream and downstream. Let the meter settle for 15 minutes. The live zero value in kg/h should stay within plus or minus 0.02% of the full scale or less. If it drifts, check for pipe stress or trapped solids. We once found a piece of bone char stuck in the tube of a used cooking oil line. It caused a 0.5 kg/h zero offset that corrupted the batch totalizer.

Density verification with a hydrometer or a laboratory density meter. Take a sample at the same temperature and compare to the meter live density reading. Difference should be under 2 kg/m³. One pass with this check and you can skip all the offline density compensation loops that a volumetric meter needs.

Flow comparison with a weighbridge or load cells if available. A 2000 kg batch weighed on platform scales should match the meter totalizer within a few kilograms. That simple check catches wrong K-factors and air removal issues faster than any flow rig.

FAQ

Can I use a turbine flow meter for tallow biodiesel? You can, but you will see errors when the viscosity changes. A turbine meter calibrated for 4 cP will overread at 18 cP. Bunker quantity disputes are very common with volumetric meters on fatty fuels.

What DN size is typical for a biodiesel reactor feed? Most reactor feed lines in Southeast Asia run DN25 or DN40, with mass flow from 500 to 5000 kg/h. We stock DN25 Coriolis meters and ship within two weeks.

How does temperature affect the mass flow reading? It does not. A Coriolis meter measures mass directly. Temperature is an output signal you can use for process monitoring, but it has zero effect on the kg/h value.

What output signal do you recommend for blending control? 4-20 mA HART with Modbus RTU. The DCS gets instantaneous flow via the analog loop and reads density, temperature, and totalizer via Modbus for blend ratio control.

Do I need ATEX certification for a biodiesel plant? Often yes. If your process stores or pumps methanol for transesterification, the area is likely Zone 1 or Zone 2. Silver Instruments supplies Coriolis meters with ATEX, IECEx, and PESO certifications.
